A Balance of Binging, Biking, and Breathing

One takeaway of this entire week is to #findabalance. So, if you find yourself with nothing to do, don’t fret, you can in fact do it all. That’s right: everything you’ve been craving to have the time to do. For starters, there is no better time to take full advantage of  all the freetime you have to finish not just one, but perhaps all of the shows you have been dying to finish. The pressure seems to be on everyone to stay productive while at home, but this needn’t be the case. If you have the spare time and feel like escaping into a different world for a while, don’t stress, go ahead and binge a little! After a while, you’ll get tired of that. So, we encourage you to get outside. There’s the great recommendation of sixty minutes a day, but in times like this, you should stay in tune with the attainable: just get outside once a day. Whether it’s sitting in the grass, walking the dogs, or riding your bike, the sun is sure to have missed you! Growing tired in gene...

Reduce Stress by Logging Off

Image
During this time we’re exposed to post after post about the latest virus outbreaks, ways to stay healthy or what activities to do during social distancing. These can be overwhelming. Instead of letting the negatives of the online world consume you, find a way to counter it. My preferred method is completely logging off.  You may think this is impossible due to homework/work deadlines, keeping up with friends or breaking news, BUT it’s not. Logging off will limit your intake of social and news media therefore limiting stress. Also, if your institutions allow it, ask for a mental health day or just time off. Everyone needs some time to wind down and figure out how to handle their own situation. Of course this doesn’t have to be a permanent or for an extended amount of time. Adjust your disconnection for whatever amount of time benefits you. This can be for a few hours, days, weeks or even months if you truly desire that.  An alternative option is limiting yourself o...

Journal of Your Dreams: Part Three

Good Morning! For those following our #jotdownyourdreams challenge, here is my THIRD and final dream: ~~~ Before stumbling onto/into Mom and Dad’s home… I remember being on a conveyor-belt-esque [it was moving], wooden bridge, right along the edge of the water. I looked up in the distance, and I said “Corona Mountain!” [from Mario Sunshine], and that was apparently the place we were headed (even though the bridge was moving in the opposite direction). And I kept on thinking I was accidentally gonna drop my phone in the water I don’t think I had a phone though... But then we somehow got right up near the mountain/volcano and I almost jumped off too late onto the arrial platform (I only saw lava-covered platforms left for me to jump onto from the moving bridge we were on, so I thought I was a goner) but there was a non-lava one left so I was good. T hen we went inside the hideout [attached to the bottom of Corona Mountain?] and that’s I think when/where we became...

Journal of Your Dreams: Part Two

Good morning again! For those following our #jotdownyourdreams challenge, here is my SECOND dream: ~~~ I was definitely a shenobi [reference from Naruto, meaning 'ninja']. Part of the setting was in my mom and dad’s actual home [usually their home in my dreams is a little off, but this time there was stark accuracy]. I think it was a continuation of my previous dream. I had to reach into the coat closet (or maybe Allison from my PR class helped me) to get the pink hoodie that mom tailored for me. And I had a ton of different currency (bonus bucks from somewhere [I think this was an allusion to one of my earlier years in school, like fifth grade], etc). I also had, in my wallet, like forty-ish dollars in cash, most of which were super large, exotic two-dollar bills given to me by another female archetype in my life (maybe Rachel W???). I was getting prepared to go outside the door and down the street (towards Justin’s old house) to where a festival/market/gathering o...

Online Adventures

Traveling the World With a Few Clicks Now is NOT the time to leave your home to travel. Most, if not all, non-essential businesses have closed to the public. A few stores and restaurants in Kirksville have remained open but changed their policies to fit the current pandemic. Walmart and Aldi have signs posted throughout their stores to remind customers to stay 6 feet apart, and Walmart is restricting the amount of people that can enter at a time. To Die For Bakery, Maxwell’s, Bonzai and a couple other eateries aren’t completely shutting their doors. The three mentioned are providing curbside pick ups or carry out orders.  As a liberal arts student, I am interested in learning about a variety of topics. As a young college student, travelling to new places with cheap flights is tempting. But due to our social responsibility and my overwhelming conscience, I am choosing to social distance myself to stop the spread of COVID-19.  And you should too.  Just because w...

Journal of Your Dreams: Part One

Rise and shine! If you saw our Facebook page yesterday, you’re probably following our #jotdownyourdreams challenge, here is MY first dream: ~~~ We were already in a basement-like room (with some old chairs, dim lighting, and something like a tv where you would play games and such… But there was an evil pikachu, and another figure lurking beyond the landing at the steps (steps that mysteriously went even farther into the earth (we perhaps weren’t already in a basement). The lights were going crazy, or there was fog everywhere for a short while---it was hard to tell, as the sight sense was devastated either way. I knew I had to get out of there, so I went to the bottom of the stairs, and farther into the earth. When I arrived at the landing, there was the same old rack of clothes that we saw at Thanksgiving in Uncle John and Aunt Lucy’s basement with the Mexican-style, embroidered pieces. However, I was searching for weapons, and there was one toolbox that I started sifting t...

Keeping Physically Fit During Quarentine

My physical health has been lagging since my return home from college so I decided to share some ways I have been keeping physically active when I am social distancing or even for everyday life in general. I would like to encourage you to take part with me and comment on what ways you are physically staying fit. 1. Walking my dog        This is for my most lazy days. I have a Boston Terrier that is 9 years old and has short legs so she only needs to walk for approximately 20 minutes a day. Either way, I recommend getting up and immediately going for a walk. It sets me up for being lots more busy and effective during the day. And it gets you out of the house. 2. Going on a Run or Walk          Running is an acquired taste, I ran cross country for four years and I don't even like it sometimes. However, running, and walking go hand in hand with cardiovascular health benefits. 3. Stretching         Stretching is ...

World Health Day

Image
Today is World Health Day, and this year, the theme is “Support Nurses and Midwives.” It is likely that everyone will be helped by a nurse or midwife at some point in their lives, so this is the perfect opportunity to take the time to thank the medical personnel in your life.  World Health Day was first celebrated on April 7, 1950, making this the 70th anniversary of the holiday. It was established by the World Health Organization as a celebration of the anniversary of its founding. The holiday is celebrated by every WHO member country, so even though the current global health situation makes it difficult to hold traditional events, people all over the world are finding ways to celebrate.  Each year, the WHO chooses a different health issue or cause to highlight, and this year it chose to shine the spotlight on some very important health professionals: nurses and midwives. Midwives are healthcare workers who help deliver babies and care for the mother and child in th...

How to Stay Social Through the Distance

Image
Getting together with friends is a pastime that’s sorely missed right now. We can’t gather in someone’s house, go out to eat, sit down and chat in a cafe, or do anything fun in public surrounded by other people.  So what happens to our celebrations? Here’s a thread of different ways people are putting on social distancing gatherings. You can still have (or throw) a birthday party.  21st birthdays in this country revolve around being able to finally have access to places with age restrictions like bars and clubs. It's often the opposite of a birthday at home. Toasting with friends on Zoom. With a little help from friends and family, I was able to fill my 21st birthday with amazing video chat conversations, online games and activities, and toasts. My cousins live in New Mexico, but t hrough Facebook messenger video chat, I could connect with family from far away. Birthday décor. Chatting with cousins. And for the people living with me, ...
